High Commissioner’s Welcome

Australia and Canada have a highly productive relationship. We have much in common, not only as commodity producers and exporters, but as ‘full spectrum’ economies with sophisticated services sectors.

Both our countries are deeply engaged in questions of world order and development and face many similar challenges.

Our official relations date back to 1895 when the Government of Canada sent its trade commissioner to Sydney. Canada sent its first High Commissioner to Australia in 1939, and Australia reciprocated with its first official representative arriving in Ottawa in March 1940.

Since then there have been 22 Australian High Commissioners to Canada. In 2009 our two countries will celebrate 70 years of official diplomatic relations. This will be an opportunity to take stock and review how we can further deepen our relationship and explore the possibilities of renewing our partnership for the 21st century.

This website is intended to provide information about Australia, on how Australia and Canada work together and services available to Australian nationals. I hope you find it helpful. If you are interested in more detailed information we would be happy to hear from you.
