JOB VACANCY AT THE AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION:
VISITS AND TRAVEL OFFICER
A dynamic and enthusiastic person will join the policy and public affairs team at the Australian High Commission to promote Australian interests throughout Canada. The successful candidate will flexibly contribute to fast-paced demands of a high profile diplomatic mission with a focus on managing senior visits by Australians to Canada and travel by High Commission staff. Opportunities for advancement within the policy and public affairs team exist.
Status: Full-time

Contract: Initial period of 2 years
Commencement: July-August 2008 (negotiable)
Salary Range: $C38,000 - $C42,000 per annum

SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants are required to address each of the Essential selection criteria in a document separate from their curriculum vitae to be eligible for an interview. Where possible the applicant’s statement of claim should also address the Desirable selection criteria. The applicant’s statement against all criteria should not exceed four pages.
Essential:
• strong personal and interpersonal attributes including flexibility, initiative, motivation, teamwork
• ability to work unsupervised, manage time and meet deadlines
• the right to work in Canada;
• high level of oral and written communication skills;
• related work experience and skills; and
• office technology skills.
Desirable:
• ability to read and converse in French;
• knowledge of Australia and key issues in Canada-Australia relations; and
• an understanding of the requirements in making travel arrangements for an organisation and its visitors.
DUTY STATEMENT
The following duty statement provides an indication of the duties performed by the Visits and Protocol Officer in addition to flexibly adapting to tasks to support the objectives of Australia in Canada.
Visits
• Manage high-level Australian visits in conjunction with the policy and public affairs team, including proactive development of programs, logistics and supporting events;
• Liaison and relationship building with government, business, non-governmental organisations and cultural organisations in Canada and Australia
• Coordinate and produce programs and background briefing material on policy and practical issues of interest to visitors
• Arrange airport facilitation and accompany visitors on official programs, as necessary.
Travel
• arrange all travel and accommodation bookings for High Commission officers and visitors
• process payments for travel entitlements and for the acquittal of travel advances.
Public Affairs, Policy and Administration
• support public affairs events, media opportunities and policy
• administrative duties as required.
